The process is the product.

I first heard this expression in early 1995, and I reacted with mocking amusement. I thought, “No silly, this beautiful house that we have worked diligently for the last 6 months to construct plus the numerous weeks of design time that went it to the project before that and the years of enjoyment from living in it…that’s the product!”

It was later that evening that I was overcome with a feeling of ice cold water running down my spine. Its how I imagine those football coaches feel when a couple of players sneak-up and dump the giant bucket of Gatorade on their head in the closing seconds of a triumphant victory… except that my feeling was not the pure joy of success, but more like the full blown panic of waking up to realize you forgot to set your alarm and now you are seriously late for work!

My epiphany was that there was a certain truth to this statement, a lot of truth in fact, and that the key to distinguishing our then young organization from the competition would be to embrace this concept and make it one of our core operating principles. Homebuilding with the Clearwater Group is a homeowner-focused process designed to maximize the client’s benefits and minimize the stress of this major life event.

This concept is applied most clearly in the unique relationship that we have with our clients. We share an open dialogue regarding every aspect of the design + build process, each of the financing options available, the versatility of our selection process and the universe of products that we make available to each of our homeowners to enable them to own a truly personalized one-of-a-kind luxury home.

We extend the concept to each of our building partners-the subcontractors who provide their craftsmanship, the vendors who provide their quality products and the various service providers who provide assistance in many crucial ways. We convey to each of them that, while timeliness and cost competitiveness are valuable, it is equally critical that they provide responsiveness and accountability to our clients so that the process can be as enjoyable and fulfilling as the final product, a magnificent home.

Hardly a day goes by that I don’t think of how “The process is the product” has changed not only the way we do business, but so many of my daily & lifelong interactions.

We know that the idea of building a new home can be intimidating and it has been blamed for causing various afflictions from matrimonial disharmony to road rage (no scientific study of this has been performed to my knowledge), but we aspire to conquer this challenge on behalf of those who invest their trust in our organization.
